DRIFT SCHOOL

Drift School - The Bend

Our "bring your own car" Drift School at The Bend is run on a half wet, half dry skidpan in a super safe and controlled environment, with instructors available to jump in the car with you or provide advice from the outside.

The wet section of the skidpan is used for the Beginner and Intermediate courses, which include:

- Donuts
- Figure 8s

The dry section is used as a corner for Advanced learners to practice drift entries, including handbrake entries, and transitions and/or tandems.

Typically the event runs from 9.00am to 1.30pm, with 9.00am to 11.30am focusing on the three courses (Donuts, FIgure 8s and Entries), and then 12.00pm - 1.00pm being an opportunity for School Drivers to try the Open Skidpan in the 'Meihan replica' layout for an hour (maximum 6 cars on track at once).

Drift School - Mallala

Our 'Super School' at Mallala is also a 'bring your own car' event and offers a few more courses catering for everything from Beginners to more experienced Drivers wanting to finesse their skills. It is held across both the Mallala Motorsport Park main track, with a wet skidpan option for Beginners similar to above, and instructors available to jump in wherever you need.

FAQs

How old do I need to be?
Drivers must be at least 14 years old, however anyone younger than 18 must contact us for approval before entering and have a parent/guardian with them.

What kind of car do I need?

A rear wheel drive car! There is no requirement for a specific track car or rollcage for the School / Skidpan events (unless you have a convertible). There is also no requirement for a roll cage, however, if you don’t run a cage, you must have OEM side intrusion beams fitted as a minimum (which should still be there unless you remove them!). We have people bring out brand new street cars as well as specific track only cars, there is no one right car for drifting! See the Vehicle Requirements page for more information.

When are Drift Schools?
As a volunteer organisation, our dates are pre-planned as a yearly calendar in advance. Schools usually offer about 2.5 hours of exercises and then 1 hour of open track to test your new skills. Check out the dates of our Drift Schools (including Super Schools) on our Events page.

Can I take passengers?
You can! You can have one of our instructors jump in your car, or a friend or family member can purchase a Passenger Pass (which requires completing some insurance waivers) and jump in the car with you.

What kind of licence do I need to enter?
You do not need a Drivers Licence, but you do need a special motorsport licence, which is called the Racers Clubman Licence (single event permit is $50) and can be easily purchased online. Click Here to purchase either a Single Event or Annual License online.

Will I need to bring tyres and spare parts?
That really depends on your car, but if you're starting out, the wet part of the skidpan is designed to minimise tyre use. We've had many people attend without using any tyres on the wet skidpan for several events!

What do I wear?
Helmet - minimum standard is Australian or NZ standard AS/NZS1698. Long sleeve clothing and closed toed shoes.

Can spectators come?
Yes, they will need to purchase a ticket at driftingsa.com.au/tickets - passenger passes will be sold on the day.
